Device
A 256GB WiFi iPad is what we purchase at ASIJ for teachers and school leaders to use. It is an affordable device that should still be highly usable over the course of four years. If your child is entering 2nd grade with a new 256GB WiFi iPad, we predict that it will still be serving their educational needs when they leave 5th grade. We do not recommend a 64GB model as it does not have sufficient storage capacity to hold images and video.
We do not recommend the iPad mini, iPad Air, or iPad Pro models due to the fact that they have extra features that we will not utilize and do not justify the significant cost increase.
All families should feel free to buy their technology wherever it is most convenient for them, online or in person, here in Tokyo or while traveling over the summer.

Headphones and Microphone
Either over ear or in ear wired headphones are suitable. Make sure your child's headphones have a microphone to record voice. We also recommend getting a model that protects children's hearing by reducing high volumes.
Avoid Bluetooth headphones. Managing bluetooth connections and keeping headphones charged has proven to be difficult at the Elementary School level. Below are just some example suggestions.

Case
When choosing an iPad case, there a couple of things to keep in mind. First, make sure the case has good corner protection. Second, the case does not have to have a screen cover, but should at least come up around the side to provide a lip around the edges of the screen. These two tips will give the most protection against fall damage. Third, do not purchase a case that is too bulky and make it difficult for your child to put it in their backpack. Finally, make sure the case you purchase is made for your child's iPad model. Each generation of iPad is a slightly different size and only cases designed for your particular model will fit.
iPad case availability changes frequently. Below are just some example suggestions.

We use iPads in class when they are the best learning tool for the task. This means there may be days where the iPad is used for several tasks and days where it is not used at all. Additionally, to foster ethical use, social development, and allow for greater face-to-face interaction we have the following guidelines in place:

Q. Is there a warranty plan for iPad?
Yes. There are three options available:
Q. Where can I get help if my child’s iPad has problems?
We have a help desk located in the ES that you and your child can access at any time. Q. What if the ASIJ help desk can’t fix the iPad problem?
We have a loaner program for students whose iPads are under repair. To use a loaner while your child's iPad is being repaired your child must present a receipt from the Apple Store and sign for a loaner iPad which means he/she will accept responsibility for that loaner device during the time it is being used. |
